Barbara's son Sean C. Carmody, who had developed a keen understanding of football and had recently decided to become a football coach, became a donor at age 19. Barbara will graduate from the University of Miami RN to BSN program in December 2003. She volunteers and serves as Medical Advisory Board member for Life Alliance, the Miami area organ procurement organization. The Transplant Foundation honored her with The Miracle Maker award in 2001.
