Christopher Trevizo

"We honored our son’s wishes and knew we did the right thing."

Christopher had a smile that would light up a room. Even when death was knocking at his door we were all in the waiting room (friends, family and loved ones) remembering his love for life and how he made us laugh with his George Lopez imitations. He was only 15 years old but he gave the ultimate gift of love to his First Grade Teacher and two other people, The Gift of Life.

Two weeks before his death we were watching the nightly news. There was a story about two babies that needed heart transplants. One baby received a heart and the other was waiting for a donor’s heart. He asked me “Mom if something ever happened to me could the baby get my heart?” I explained how his heart was too big for a baby but that there was always someone who could use his heart.

One day, Chris and his twin friends were walking to the local elementary school to pick up my grand kids. Three boys acted together and took the lives of Chris and his friend Demetrius.

By the grace of God one of the twin brothers was spared. Demetrius died on the scene and Chris hung on for 6 days. Our son was able to give the gift of life to others through organ donation. He was so full of life and had a heart of gold. I would tease him and tell him he was the neighborhood social worker. He always went out of his way to help others.

It was a hard decision because even though we knew what he wanted, my husband and I were not on the same page. I knew he was gone, but my husband was waiting for a miracle. On the day that we signed the consent forms we honored our son’s wishes and knew we did the right thing.

Christopher is “Our Hero” and to this day has his loved ones and the families of the recipients smile when he is remembered.
