Donor Registration and
Family Consent
At the time of referral from the hospital, OneLegacy searches the Donate Life California Organ and Tissue Donor Registry to determine whether the patient is a registered donor. If upon evaluation the patient is determined to be medically eligible to donate, at an appropriate time the legal next-of-kin is approached with the opportunity to donate.
If the patient is a registered donor, the family is notified that OneLegacy will proceed with organ – and, if applicable, tissue – recovery. If the individual is not registered, the family is asked to give their consent for organ and/or tissue recovery. If the family consents, the legal next-of-kin signs a donor consent form.
The Donate Life California Registry is a state-authorized confidential database that records the donation wishes of individuals who live, work, or study in California. Each registrant’s personal authorization for donation is stored in a secure database free of charge, so that upon one's death, his or her life-saving wishes can be fulfilled. State donor registries are operational in 49 states and the District of Columbia. To find out how to become a donor outside California, visit the Donate Life America website.
