Contacting Your Donor Family

Many recipients tell us that writing to their donor family is one of the hardest things they’ve ever done. It is not uncommon for recipients to feel that they do not have the ‘perfect’ words to accurately express how they feel.

The decision to write to your donor family is a very personal one. If you feel like writing, please write. The majority of our donor families tell us that they hope to hear from their loved one’s recipients, for this brings them comfort. There is no time frame – you can write as soon as you are ready.

If you choose to write to your donor family, you may send a letter or a card. If you don’t feel comfortable to write a letter, a signed card will be appreciated by your donor family.

The links below are our guidelines and some sample letters to help you with your letter. Please know that your identity and privacy will be protected through this process.

If you have questions, please talk with the staff at your transplant center or you can contact OneLegacy’s Family Care department at 800-423-7220 or familycare@onelegacy.org
